What Inspired You to Be An Engineer?

December 22, 2014

be an engineerAs a civil engineer, you are challenged by constantly changing work environments that require creativity, adaptability, good problem-solving skills and the ability to think on one’s feet. Your work may be below the surface delivering tunnels, underground railways and energy and water supplies as well as above the surface creating roads, bridges, stadiums, hospitals, skyscrapers and many more.

However, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics, the U.S. has a problem: There aren’t enough students pursuing careers like yours.

To help address this situation, ASCE has joined the Be An Engineer campaign, a nationwide initiative led by the Exxon Mobil Corporation to show kids the amazing opportunities for engineers. This campaign seeks to inspire the next generation of engineers, aims to highlight the meaningful contributions that engineers make to the world, and provides resources to assist young people interested in pursuing the profession.

Add your voice to the campaign by sharing your experiences as a civil engineer and describing how engineering can make for a rewarding and valuable career. Using words, videos, graphics, images, materials, or photos, submit your engineering experiences to Be An Engineer and explain things like:

  •  What led you to choose civil engineering as your career?
  •  What do you like about your job?
  •  What kinds of training did you have?
  •  What is your day like?
  •  What kinds of interests did you have growing up?
  •  Where did you go to college?
  •  What experiences do you recommend before a student goes off to college?

Right now on the Be An Engineers website, you can read about past ASCE President Patricia Galloway, Ph.D., P.E., Pres.04.ASCE; Margaret S. Peterson, P.E., D.WRE, Dist.M.ASCE; Henry Larcom Abbot; Charles A. Ellis; John A. Roebling; Karl von Terzaghi; Benjamin Wright; and many more. How about adding your story and experiences to that list of distinguished civil engineers?
