University of Kentucky Department Chair Elevated to Fellow Status

Reginald R. (Reg) Souleyrette II, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, chair of the Department of Civil Engineering and Commonwealth Professor of Transportation Engineering at the University of Kentucky, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

Souleyrette also serves as program manager for planning and decision analytics at the university’s Kentucky Transportation Center. Prior to joining UK in 2011, he was Gerald and Audrey Olson Professor of Civil Engineering at Iowa State University, where he served as associate chair of both the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering and the Center for Transportation Research and Education (now Intrans).

He has led many research projects for USDOT, State DOTs, local transportation agencies, foundations, and private transportation firms. He served as research director for the Southeast Transportation Center (a USDOT University Transportation Center), and as a principal investigator for the National University Rail Center (NURail).
Souleyrette’s areas of research and publication subjects include transportation data and information systems, highway safety, and railroad engineering, and he has taught a wide variety of graduate and undergraduate courses in highway safety, GIS, transportation engineering, planning, modeling, and design, as well as specialized courses in airport and railroad design.

He is a member and past Chair of ASCE’s Transportation and Development Institute’s Planning and Education Committee as well as a member of its Education and Advanced Technologies Committees, and regularly participates in the Society’s National Civil Engineering Department Heads Conference and its Transportation Land Use, Planning, and Air Quality Conference Technical Committees.

He is also a Fellow member of the Association of Traffic Safety Information Systems Professionals, and a member of the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers, American Society for Engineering Education, and the National Academies’ Transportation Research Board. For TRB, he serves as an at-large member of the Safety and Systems Users Group Executive Board and is past chair of the TRB Data and Information Systems Section and Geospatial Information Science and Applications Committee.

Souleyrette receive B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering from the University of Texas (Austin) and a Ph.D. in civil engineering (transportation) from the University of California (Berkeley). He is a registered professional engineer in Iowa and Kentucky.
