UNC Charlotte Civil Engineering Program Director Named ASCE Fellow

Srinivas S. Pulugurtha, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, professor and graduate program director of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, has been elevated to the status of Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

Pulugurtha teaches graduate as well as undergraduate courses and conducts research in the transportation engineering field at UNC Charlotte. He also directs the Infrastructure, Design, Environment and Sustainability (IDEAS) Center on the campus. Prior to these appointments, he worked as an assistant director and assistant research professor of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’s Transportation Research Center (UNLV-TRC) from 1998 to 2005.

His experience working in transportation is diverse. It includes transportation safety, intelligent transportation systems, transportation system planning, geographic information systems applications, internet applications, traffic operations, and artificial intelligence techniques and operations research applications. During his 23-year tenure as a researcher, Pulugurtha led and completed over 65 sponsored projects as principal investigator or co-principal. He authored or coauthored over 200 publications, including 52 journal papers. He also made over 150 technical presentations at international, national, regional, and local conferences. His research accomplishments were recognized with three “best research paper” awards. Additionally, he advised and mentored 11 Ph.D. students, over 50 M.S. students, and several undergraduate students. He was recognized with the UNC Charlotte College of Engineering Graduate Teaching Award in 2010 for his accomplishments as a mentor, advisor, and teacher.

He is professionally very active, being a member of such organizations as ASCE, the Institute of Transportation Engineers, and the Transportation Research Board. He has served as a member of several technical committees, including ASCE’s T&DI Planning, Economics, and Finance Committee. He also served as the Faculty Advisor for the ITE Student Chapter from 2006 to 2016. Moreover, he has been a member of two journal editorial boards.

From 2007 to 2016, Pulugurtha chaired the T&DI Planning, Economics and Finance Committee. He worked with the TRB Air Quality Committee and the Federal Highway Administration to co-host the Transportation Land Use, Planning, & Air Quality Conferences in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014, and 2016. He worked as the editor of related conference proceedings. As well, he served on the 2013 T&DI Green Streets, Highways, and Development Conference Scientific Committee and the 2014 T&DI Second World Congress Steering Committee.

Pulugurtha received his B.Tech. in civil engineering from Nagarjuna University, in India, in 1992, his M.Tech. in civil engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in 1995, and Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1998. He is a registered civil engineer in the State of North Carolina.
