Kirankumar V. Topudurti, Ph.D., P.E, DEE, Dist.M.ASCE, is honored by ASCE for his distinguished contributions to advancing the engineering, science, and field implementation of innovative hazardous waste remediation, sampling, and characterization technologies as well as for his national and international leadership in advancing professional engineering licensure and specialty certification requirements. As deputy director of the Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL), Topudurti serves as the chief operating officer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers laboratory that provides interdisciplinary research and development capabilities for the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense, and the nation. His efforts have a direct, positive impact on CERL’s ability to provide science and engineering solutions to the complex, military-specific challenges inherent in owning and operating quality military installations for the soldier. Topudurti’s contributions to environmental engineering are recognized worldwide. He has served as an invited environmental technology delegate to Russia and Ukraine, and was an invited member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board for establishing a national laboratory accreditation program. His contributions to advancing engineering and field implementation of advanced oxidation technologies and petroleum hydrocarbon contamination characterization technologies have been published in several peer-reviewed journals and as practitioners’ handbooks. Topudurti is the only engineer to receive the Grand Prize in the American Academy of Environmental Engineers’ (AAEE) Excellence in Environmental Engineering Competition twice – in 1996 and 2002. For his extraordinary contributions to the Army research and development mission, he was recognized in 2010 with the highest civilian award presented by the Secretary of the Army, the Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service.
