Douglas D. Gransberg, Ph.D., P.E., M.ASCE, Jennifer S. Shane, A.M.ASCE, Kelly Strong, Ph.D., DBIA, A.M.ASCE, and Carla Lopez del Puerto, Ph.D., are the recipients of The Journal of Management in Engineering Best Peer Reviewed Paper Award for their paper, “Project Complexity Mapping in Five Dimensions for Complex Transportation Projects,” which appeared in the October 2013 issue of ASCE’s Journal of Management in Engineering. This paper reports the findings of an international research team’s detailed study of 18 complex projects and confirms the findings of the previous research. It proposes a framework upon which a complex transportation project’s scope of work can be better conceptualized and details a methodology to graphically display a project’s complexity in order to better understand and prioritize the available resources. The result is a “complexity footprint” that helps the complex transportation project manager identify sources of complexity so that appropriate resources can be allocated to address those factors before they create a crisis.
