Nick Russell, C.Eng., F.ASCE, a director of Guildford, United Kingdom–based Thomasons Ltd. and its subsidiary company, Clear Structures, is a practicing chartered structural and civil engineer with over 34 years of professional experience in consulting engineering. He has considerable experience in many facets of structural engineering and particular expertise in urban regeneration, including land remediation and the adaptation and modernization of existing buildings. A member of the University of Surrey’s Industrial Advisory Board and a visiting professor of the school, Russell’s experience encompasses’ many sectors, to include substantial commercial, industrial, and retail buildings and urban regeneration projects. Over the last 20 years he has been increasingly involved as an expert advising on many construction-related disputes both in the U.K. and, more recently, overseas. However, despite the demands of running a successful practice, Russell relishes the opportunity to roll up his sleeves and get involved in the conceptual design of projects, and especially to help students and graduates develop these skills. Active within the Institution of Structural Engineers (a U.K.-based structural engineering society with over 105 countries) for over 27 years, Russell currently serves as its president.
