The ASCE Structural Engineering Institute’s Trial Design Problems test civil engineers’ practice, while also generating valuable data that improves future codes and standards.
The latest is a snow-load trial design problem – found here (PDF download.)
The purpose is to evaluate how accurately practicing engineers can understand and implement the current code as well as potential future code provisions. Engineering firms and organizations often have used the trial design problems as a good exercise to organize at a lunch or local group activity. The exercise is designed to take about an hour.
When the results are summarized and communicated to respective standards committees, sources for solutions will be kept anonymous. The above problem is representative of a common engineering task that is performed in structural engineering offices on a routine basis.
