Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure Announces New Partnership with Skanska

December 22, 2014

In another significant advance for the Envision sustainable infrastructure rating system, Skanska, one of the largest construction and development companies in the country, has joined forces with the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) to provide employee training and credentialing for the Envision Sustainability Professionals (ENV SPs) program. In addition, Skanska senior executives will provide support and technical expertise to ISI and its board.

With the partnership, Skanska has committed to aligning the delivery of heavy infrastructure civil projects with efforts to ensure the social, economic and environmental sustainability of the communities where they are built.

Once credentialed as ENV SPs, Skanska employees will be able to document and rate sustainability aspects of infrastructure projects using Envision, allowing the firm to further demonstrate its commitment to embed sustainability throughout its infrastructure practices. The Envision rating tool allows individuals to assess, rate, and score infrastructure projects against a full range of sustainability objectives.

“I am pleased and excited that Skanska has chosen to incorporate the Envision infrastructure rating system into their projects,” says Greg DiLoreto, P.E., P.L.S., D.WRE, Pres.13.ASCE, a member of the ISI Board of Direction. “This important member of our infrastructure industry provides a great example of our commitment to building green.”

“Our support of ISI and Envision,” says Skanska USA President and CEO Richard Cavallaro, “is a way to declare that no matter what you are building—from a hospital to the highway that gets you there—it can be built green.”

Since its inception, Envision has been a tremendous success, promoting transformational approaches to increase a project’s sustainable performance for social, economic and environmental factors. The rating system can be applied to a broad range of infrastructure projects from roads and bridges to water systems to energy systems and be scalable from local projects up to highly complex regional systems.

“ISI welcomes this new partnership with Skanska, a company with an organizational commitment to promote sustainable infrastructure in healthy, thriving communities,” says ISI President and CEO Bill Bertera.

Envision™ is the product of a joint collaboration between ISI, which was founded by ASCE, the American Council of Engineering Companies and the American Public Works Association, and the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure at Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
