Thomas T. C. Hsu, Ph.D., P.E., Dist.M.ASCE, researcher, educator and practitioner in the field of concrete structures and structural engineering, has been named to the 2015 Class of Distinguished Members of ASCE for his contributions as an outstanding leader in the engineering profession. He is recognized for his advancements to the theories, practices, and education of structural engineering.
Hsu formerly chaired and developed the civil engineering department at the University of Miami, Florida, and is acclaimed for his innovative structural design for the rapid transit system in the city of Miami. He subsequently joined the University of Houston (UH) as chairman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. With funding from the National Science Foundation, Hsu led the team who built the universal panel tester which remains the most advanced research equipment for testing concrete panels.
Hsu was the first to visually observe microcracks in concrete and to relate this phenomenon to the properties of concrete. His definitive studies on shear and torsion in reinforced concrete led to a unified theory for the behavior of concrete structures and to the codification of the shear and torsion provisions of the American Concrete Institute. Hsu has authored numerous scholarly works and 2 books, Torsion of Reinforced Concrete, and Unified Theory of Reinforced Concrete. He also co-wrote Unified Theory of Concrete Structures, a work that is a milestone in reinforced concrete knowledge important to the safety of infrastructures under earthquake conditions, a particularly challenging subject with regard to nuclear energy and safety.
Hsu earned his bachelor of science degree from Harbin Institute of Technology, China, and his master of science and doctorate in structural engineering from Cornell University. He holds a John and Rebecca Moores Professorship at UH and is the founding director of the Thomas T.C. Hsu Structural Research Laboratories.
