Former District 11 Director Robert Wortman Dies

Robert H. “Bob” Wortman, Ph.D., a former member of the ASCE Board of Direction, died July 25 in Tuscon, AZ. He was a professor of civil engineering at the University of Illinois, the University of Connecticut, and the University of Arizona.

A Life Member of the Society, Dr. Wortman joined ASCE in 1957 and rose through several posts, including a three-year tenure as District 11 Director and member of the ASCE Board of Direction from 1993-1995. He was a former chair of ASCE’s Highway Division Executive Committee, and served on the Publications Committee as well as on the Task Committee on Life Member Involvement. In 2006 he received the John C. Park Outstanding Civil Engineer Award presented by ASCE’s Arizona Society of Civil Engineers Section.

Born and raised in Dexter, NM, Dr. Wortman graduated from the University of New Mexico with a bachelor of science in civil engineering. He attended a traffic and transportation planning year course at Yale University, and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. His family asked that any donations in his name be made to the ASCE Foundation.
