Veera Gnaneswar Gude, Ph.D., P.E., BCEE, F.ASCE, an associate professor of environmental engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Mississippi State University, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
Gude has over 18 years of academic, industry, and research experience in the environmental engineering field, including six years with Du Pont Singapore and a startup company in Seattle. While in industry, he provided many innovative solutions for industrial wastewater and stormwater management and treatment. He has been a team member of numerous process design and environmental engineering projects ranging from $5,000 to over $70 million.
His unique blend of chemical and environmental engineering academic backgrounds with industry and research experience has inspired many innovative solutions to issues at the nexus of water, energy and environment in water desalination, and bioenergy scientific and technical areas. His contributions through two innovative technologies for low-temperature water desalination and microalgal biofuel production have been demonstrated in the U.S. and worldwide.
Gude’s research efforts were funded by the NSF, EPA, USGS, and others. His efforts have resulted in industry collaborations, two patents, and over 150 scholarly publications, including 75 highly regarded discipline-specific journal articles and 5 books. His scientific research contributions have been recognized through awards at national, and international platforms. He has made more than 150 presentations related to scientific and educational research and delivered more than 40 invited lectures, panelist talks, and presentations. He organized workshops and technical forums on the water-energy nexus and clean and combined energy-water production topics at a host of society conferences and renewable energy forums.
His research outcomes, published in numerous popular and professional media outlets, are widely cited. His research output in desalination and bioenergy was utilized in process design, technology and renewable energy resource assessment. He has provided scientific and technological services to many agencies internationally.
He has served New Mexico State University, Oregon Institute of Technology, and Mississippi State University in different capacities as faculty, offering some 18 different courses and contagious enthusiasm. Many teaching excellence awards are his, and NMSU and MSU honored him as a Distinguished Teaching Academy member. In addition, he has received two major honors at MSU on separate occasions for excellence in teaching and graduate student mentoring.
Gude has provided dedicated services to ASCE, AAEES, ACS, ASEE, ASES, and WEF. He is an editor or editorial board member of several reputed journals, one being ASCE’s Journal of Environmental Engineering. He is the program chair for the environmental engineering division of ASEE, and was appointed by AAEES as state representative and as chief examiner for board certifications in Mississippi. He was also the chair and board representative for the clean energy and water division of ASES between 2011 and 2016.
He received a B.S. (2000) from Osmania University, India, an M.S. (2005) from National University of Singapore, and a Ph.D. (2007) from New Mexico State University. He is a licensed professional engineer and a board-certified environmental engineer, also known as diplomate of environmental engineering.
