Dean of Engineering at The Citadel Elected ASCE Fellow

Ronald W. Welch, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, dean of the School of Engineering at The Citadel and a retired colonel in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, highly regarded for his leadership, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.

Col. Welch retired from the Corps of Engineers in 2007. While with the corps, he served as a combat engineer with the First Cavalry Division, a basic and advanced engineering course instructor, and a combat-heavy operations and construction engineer, where he planned and executed projects in Central and South America.

Highly engaged in ASCE activities with an instructional focus, Welch’s career has included service on the faculty development committee, educational activities committee, and the ExCEEd teaching workshops since the program’s 1999 inception.

Welch’s prior academic appointments have included professor and department head of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Texas, Tyler and associate professor, civil engineering program director, and deputy department head of civil and mechanical engineering at the U.S. Military Academy. He received ASCE’s ExCEEd Leadership Award in 2015.
