ASCE Executive Director, Tom Smith

As part of ASCE’s Global Strategy, President Bob Stevens and I will travel to India and the United Arab Emirates later this month to further develop our overall international activities and relationships.

As I am sure you are aware, ASCE’s mission is to provide essential value to all of our members and partners, to advance civil engineering, and to better serve the public good. The purpose of our Global Strategy is to explore opportunities that will maximize ASCE’s impact globally, by building relationships, exchanging information, and finding new ways to enhance member value and advance engineering education, including through our publications, continuing education, and credentialing programs. Building upon this, we hope with our visit to India and the United Arab Emirates to focus on educational initiatives and work with local partners to deliver quality educational products to local markets.

Through this broader exposure to ASCE, we believe we will see continued membership growth and engagement from non-U.S. civil engineers who, in turn, will contribute to a dialogue on new developments in the field. There is so much we can learn from each other. As we engage globally, we enhance the greater body of knowledge of ASCE members and our profession.

All in the Family Homepage ImgeFor the past two years, the ASCE Foundation has been collecting stories of families that comprise generations of civil engineers. Inside the pages of the ASCE Foundation’s All in the Family: Civil Engineering Legacy Stories eBook, you’ll meet families across a wide array of specialties. These families have made strong contributions to the field, with world-renowned bridges, buildings, roads, and more to their credit. Because of this, the Foundation decided to issue a call for stories, and began to create a collection of stories for posterity. They are proud to release this second edition of their Civil Engineering Legacy eBook, and hope you enjoy learning about these families. The ASCE Foundation thanks you all for your contributions to the profession of civil engineering.
