ASCE members can enjoy tangible benefits in addition to the career development and networking opportunities frequently mentioned on this blog. At the 2012 Annual Conference, I took the opportunity to visit the Member Benefits booth and learn what new organizations ASCE has negotiated with to provide preferred rates and services. In retrospect, It took me too long to realize how valuable some of these benefits can be.
My first application to an ASCE benefit was the group term life insurance offered through Pearl Insurance. I realized, after getting married and having a child, that my employer provided life insurance was insufficient to provide security to my family. At first, I paid an additional premium on the policy offered by my company. On a whim, I checked the ASCE group rates, and was pleased to see a savings of 50%.
I have also used ASCE’s group rates on rental cars. Be sure to get the promotional codes from ASCE Member Benefits before your next booking with AVIS, Budget, or Hertz. You should be able to get discounts up to 20% off the online rates. In addition, AVIS offers a long-term (+2 months) rental special and Budget provides a coupon adding Sunday to a weekend rental for free. Also be sure to apply the ASCE discount to your own car insurance with GEICO and save up to an additional 8%.
At this year’s conference, I learned about some interesting new financial promotions. offers an ASCE member credit card that earns points on all purchases. They also have programs for business credit cards if you’re looking to streamline expense reporting. Grogan Advisory Services provides bundled 401k services and financial advising for small firms.
Most interesting, I think, are the new technology benefits. ASCE Members can get an exclusive discount (about 25%) on Panasonic Toughbook mobile computers. Mozy offers a 15% discount on online data storage and back-up services. HP offers discounts on selected desktops, laptops, tablets, and printers.
