Sreenivas Alampalli, Ph.D., P.E., F.SEI, F.ASCE, is the recipient of the Government Civil Engineer of the Year Award for his tremendous engineering achievements, internationally recognized leadership in professional and technical societies, and remarkable humanitarian and professional development activities. Director of the New York State Department of Transportation’s (NYSDOT) Structures Evaluation Services Bureau for the past 23 years, Alampalli manages structural inspection, inventory, safety, and management programs to facilitate structural preservation, structural integrity, and safety of bridge and other structural infrastructure in New York State. He also advises senior management on long-term strategies for structural evaluation services, and works with the Federal Highway Administration, as well as with other state and federal agencies, professional organizations, consultants, and members of academia, to promote research and other projects of interest to the Department of Transportation. Throughout his position as director, Alampalli has made significant contributions to the development of the robust and high-quality bridge inspection program of NYSDOT. Associate editor of ASCE’s Journal of Bridge Engineering since 2003, his unique contributions and commitment to the civil engineering profession have resulted in more than 256 technical presentations, including a large number of journal papers. Among his many awards and honors are the Herbert Howard Government Civil Engineer of the Year Award from ASCE’s Metropolitan Section in 2009, ASCE’s Charles Pankow Award for Innovation in 2000, and the ASCE Henry L. Michel Award for Industry Advancement of Research in 2013.
