For civil engineering to keep up with what society expects of us, innovation is essential.
You’d be hard-pressed to find disagreement with that sentiment. The question becomes how can we spark, foster, and implement innovative solutions?
The opening keynote speaker at the upcoming ASCE 2016 Convention, business strategist Frans Johansson, says it starts with the mix of people on your team.
“Innovative team thinking has to be developed through diversity,” the author of the best-selling The Medici Effect told Civil Engineering magazine in an exclusive interview.
“… You want to maximize diversity – create teams that consist of people from different fields or functions, different levels, different cultures and countries, different genders or ethnicities,” Johansson said. “In each of these cases you will find that the perspective that people bring to those teams is going to be different and your chances of innovating go up.”
Johansson shares more on the power of team thinking to innovate in his seven-question interview with Civil Engineering magazine. The ASCE 2016 Convention will be held in Portland, OR, Sept. 28 through Oct. 1.
