Upstate Branch Holds Popsicle Stick Bridge Event

The Upstate Branch held its 10th annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Event in Greenville, SC, the culmination of a three-month study of bridges and engineering for advanced fourth-grade students from schools in the Greenville County Schools Challenge Program.

Students tested popsicle stick bridges using wooden load frames to load the bridges to failure with up to 50 pounds of sand. Awards were given to the top three bridges for Best Structural Design, Best Architectural Design, Most Original Design, and Best Craftsmanship.

Volunteers helped with the event including, Robin A. Kemper, P.E., LEED AP, F.SEI, F.ASCE – 2018 ASCE President-Elect, Charles W. Black Jr., P.E., M.ASCE – ASCE Region 4 Director, and John W. Fleming, P.E., M.ASCE – ASCE Region 4 Governor SC, along with many other past and current ASCE South Carolina officers and members.
