Leo Titus Jr. is a subsidiary president for Engineering Consulting Services Mid-Atlantic, but for the students at Minnieland Academy Kindergarten, it’s his ability to build a solid Popsicle-stick bridge that really makes him interesting.

Titus, P.E., M.ASCE, has been volunteering with the Minnieland Academy Kindergarten and the Merit Schools for five years, in Ashburn, VA.

“The kids are very excited to meet a real engineer,” Titus said. “We talk about civil engineering and then we work on a bridge building project where I give them a challenge, and they work to engineer the problem using Popsicle sticks, cardboard, and duct tape.”

local-news-sidebarMyra Sawyers, the education curriculum specialist, has even been incorporating ASCE’s Dream Big: Engineering Our World into the STEM curriculum this year.

“It’s a program that integrates the engineering process into the curriculum and gets young kids learning about engineering at a young age,” Titus said. “It’s really a great program.”

The North Dakota Section organized a series of free Dream Big viewings this year, in partnership with local universities and firms. The film was viewed by 2,000 students and 200 adults in five major cities across the state (Bismarck, Watford City, Minot, Fargo, and Grand Forks).

The screenings were accompanied by hands-on activities led by local engineers. Participating schools also received DiscoverE activities and a presentation of impressive engineering projects in North Dakota.
