Meet Rocio Rodriguez, P.E., M.ASCE, a structural engineer for Siemens in Orlando, FL.

Rodriguez was one of three winners of ASCE’s Dream Big Contest last spring. Her prize was a trip to California in August to watch an early cut of the forthcoming IMAX film, Dream Big: Engineering Our World, presented by Bechtel and produced by MacGillivray Freeman Films in partnership with ASCE.

On her path to becoming a civil engineer

“When I was in high school, I started becoming really passionate about mathematics and physics. My dad has always been my inspiration for everything I do. So when I told him I liked engineering, he was a little hesitant. He thought it was very tough, that it was a male career, it would be too hard because I was a woman, that maybe I should consider something else. I told my dad that it was going to be okay, that I was going to be an engineer no matter what.”

Rocio’s big ‘dream’

“I really do hope there is a lot of effort by governments and countries that create cleaner energy to protect our planet, so that the generations behind me will still have a good planet to live on.”
