ASCE has honored James L. Beck, Ph.D., F.EMI, M.ASCE, with the 2017 George W. Housner Structural Control and Monitoring Medal for his exceptional and influential scholarship in structural monitoring and control research, and for his leadership in tackling uncertainty and model complexity through probabilistic approaches with emphasis on Bayesian methods.
Beck has made profoundly important contributions to this field, and continues to be a role model for many younger researchers. Although he has contributed importantly across several areas, his development and refinement of a Bayesian probabilistic approach to structural system identification for the purposes of structural health monitoring remain his signature research input.
He is the George W. Housner Professor of Engineering and Applied Science at the California Institute of Technology.
The George W. Housner Structural and Monitoring Medal recognizes outstanding research contributions to the broad field of structural control and health monitoring.
