Many ASCE members – myself included – share a passion for promoting our profession to the next generation. Each year, the Structural Engineering Institute partners with the National Council of Structural Engineers to produce a poster illustrating how a career in engineering can help you “Make Your Mark” in the world. The poster is perfect for classrooms and guidance offices, and is available free upon request. Email your request, with the address and the number of posters needed, to Suzanne Fisher. ASCE’s manager of Operations for the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI).
Would you like to help tell the story of the future of structural engineering? If you’re a student member and you think you have what it takes to put together a team to write, produce, and film your own video, consider entering the SEI competition “Achieving the Vision: Structural Engineers as Leaders & Innovators.” The short video should be based on the SEI Vision for the Future of Structural Engineering and Structural Engineers: A Case for Change. The winning video will be shown at the Structures Congress (www.structurescongress.org) April 23-25, 2015, in Portland, Oregon. The winning team will receive complimentary registration for up to 5 students and their faculty advisor to participate in the full program at the Structures Congress, including special opportunities for students to meet and mix with industry and academic leaders. Project deadline is December 12, so get started now.
Do you know a student member who represents the “New Face” of civil engineering? Each year, as part of the DiscoverE Foundation’s New Faces of Engineering Recognition Program, ASCE recognizes 10 outstanding students who demonstrate the best of civil engineering – academic achievement, early career leadership, and community service. Nominations are open through November 14. ASCE members who are 3rd, 4th, or 5th-year students are eligible. More details as well as the nomination forms are available now.
Have you met Phil? Since joining the ASCE Foundation 2 years ago and graciously accepting our offer of service as Foundation ambassador and mascot, Phil the Philanthropist Hedgehog , a cute 7-inch stuffed animal, has been traveling the world visiting civil engineers and the projects they design. Already, Phil has visited over 10 universities and ASCE Younger Member Sections exploring their local engineering sites, and he recently took an international trip to Italy. He has extensive experience traveling in suitcases, passing through security checkpoints, and posing for photos. Only recently, Phil was spotted with the USC Student Chapter at a USC football game, observing a local Steel Bridge Competition, and enjoying Disneyland. However, it is not all fun for Phil since he also emphasizes to members the important message of paying it forward by making a generous gift to the Foundation. Every contribution makes a lasting impact on the civil engineering profession for generations to come. Phil and I both agree, by making a gift, together we can make a difference.
