John Findlay Wallace and John Frank Stevens had 2 things in common: both men served as chief engineer of the original Panama Canal construction project, and both served a term as president of ASCE – Wallace in 1900 and Stevens in 1927. ASCE has since declared the Panama Canal, which opened in 1914, one of the “Seven Wonders of the Modern World” as well as one of the “Monuments of the Millennium” – and you, too, can be a part of history. In one of the most highly anticipated annual conferences ASCE has ever organized, I am very excited to invite you to our Global Engineering Conference 2014, October 7-11 in Panama City, Panama. Registration opened in May and to celebrate, we have released an inspiring video highlighting the engineering feats of the Panama Canal. Join me in Panama and, together, we will have a unique opportunity to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the legendary Panama Canal with all its history.
Sometimes the most sustainable buildings are the ones already built. On Thursday May 15, I was joined by Michele Good, director of sustainability at Akridge; Kathy Lawson, director of sustainability at Davis, Carter, Scott; Sandy Mills, ASCE’s director of operations; and Christine A. Williams, executive vice president of the ASCE Foundation, for a panel discussion of the 5-year LEED certification process and site tour of our headquarters building. Organized by the U.S. Green Building Council, ASCE’s National Capital Section Sustainability Committee, and ASCE’s Committee on Sustainability, the event demonstrated the attainability of the LEED rating system and highlighted the specifics of how our headquarters’ building achieved LEED-Gold EBOM. Well attended, the event focused on how waste, water, lighting, and air quality were addressed and also conveyed how demonstrable energy and wastewater savings were achieved. If we as civil engineers want to “talk the talk,” we have to “walk the walk,” and this event offered an opportunity to learn about the LEED building certification process through the eyes of building management and staff. ASCE invested approximately $400,000 to obtain gold certification, with a 10-year return on investment – this is what I call sustainable.

In an effort to explore how engineers can best prepare themselves to successfully serve society as leaders in the 21st century, ASCE has recently launched a new blog channel, The Leadership Imperative. Over the years, notable reports from a variety of engineering organizations have highlighted the need for future engineers to possess a greater breadth of knowledge and skill. The Leadership Imperative showcases the thoughts of prominent professionals as they make the case for why the engineering profession must rise to lead the charge of engineering tomorrow’s future. Read our latest blog and find out what industry expects from engineering graduates.
The ASCE Foundation and I are thrilled to share with you the release of the 2013 ASCE Foundation Annual Report, which highlights the donors who made a direct impact on the civil engineering community this past year. The report, which is expected to be released on June 16, also highlights the vital programs the ASCE Foundation supports with the contributions received from members like you. Check and see if your name is listed among the generous supporters who made a gift to the Foundation last year. To be included in the 2014 Annual Report, make a gift to the ASCE Foundation today.
