ASCE Recognizes Paper Addressing Liquefaction Research

ASCE has honored Ricardo Dobry, Sc.D., M.ASCE, and Tarek Abdoun, Ph.D., M.ASCE, with the 2017 Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award for their paper, “Cyclic Shear Strain Needed for Liquefaction Triggering and Assessment of Overburden Pressure Factor K6,” in the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, May 2016.

This paper has two objectives. The first is to evaluate the cyclic shear strain needed to trigger liquefaction in clean and silty sands in the field during earthquakes as an alternative to the currently used cyclic resistance ratio. The second objective is to explore the effect of a high-effective overburden pressure on the value of CRR.

It is expected that the paper will be studied and used by researchers and practitioners in the field of geotechnical earthquake engineering for some years to come.

The Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award is made to the author or authors of a paper published by the Society judged worthy of special commendation for its merit as a contribution to geotechnical engineering. Papers written by young engineers are given preference.
