Patricia D. Galloway, Ph.D., P.E., who served as ASCE’s first female president in 2004, was a featured speaker for “Game Changers,” the 2014 TEDxManhattanBeach event.

In her talk, Galloway related how her future was changed by a single engineer who spoke at her high school’s career day. She says geek stereotypes and a misunderstanding of what engineers really do has contributed to the very real, worldwide shortage of engineers. She argues that “rehumanizing” engineers and changing public perception might be good for the engineering profession and even better for the world.

once I attended a national conference of doctors and while getting introduced to the Governor when he gave at-home, he asked me, how an engineer among doctors? I replied, Sir God is a perfect engineer who made this universe, it is man who polluted this land and that is why we find so many doctors here. On this all had a hearty laugh.
