Alaska Sport Fish Hatchery Earns Gold with First Envision Award

The William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery in Anchorage, AK, received an Envision Gold award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. The project is the first to earn an award using the Envision sustainable infrastructure rating system.

The 141,000-square-foot facility is the largest indoor sport fish hatchery in North America. The project piloted and later implemented a full-scale, highly efficient, recirculated aquaculture system that reduced the energy needed to heat the process water, ventilation, and building itself by approximately 88 percent. This process significantly reduces operating costs while maintaining production goals. Compared with other conventional hatcheries, the project reduces water and power consumption by 95 percent.

The project also restores a former military brownfield and greyfield site through the removal of contaminated soils. Additionally, the project cleaned and helps to maintain nearby Ship Creek.

Partnerships became a positive driving force behind the project design. One partnership transfers waste to another facility, while another evaluated the potential to make use of warm water from a neighboring industry.

Upon completion, the project improved user accessibility, safety, and wayfinding of the site and surrounding areas. The project integrates public education throughout its design. It also enhances public space, including improvements to public parks, plazas, recreational facilities, and wildlife refuges to heighten community livability.
