Michael K. Russell, P.E., F.ASCE, an engineering small-business owner with 35 years of experience in the civil engineering field, has been named a Fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
Russell has worked in positions in both the private and public sectors in the state of Colorado. In 2001 he founded Russell Planning & Engineering Inc. and the firm has grown steadily, now employing 24 people in Durango, CO. They are focused on creating and improving communities throughout the region by their professional services and by active participation in and contribution to the respective local government committees and nonprofit organizations. The firm was awarded the Small Business of the Year Award by the 800-member Durango Chamber of Commerce.
Russell’s involvement with ASCE began with the Student Chapter at the University of Colorado in 1982, and he was later a founding Board member in the establishment of ASCE’s Southwest Colorado Branch. He has served in several Board roles, including that of President, and has several employees who also served or currently serve as Board members. Russell is also an active Board member of the La Plata Economic Development Alliance. He has chaired the government affairs committee for the Homebuilders Association of SW Colorado and has served on numerous local government committees.
He resides in Durango, where he raised two children with his wife of 25 years. He enjoys skiing, hiking, running, and mountain biking as well as the beautiful scenery of the Four Corners region.
